      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>European species closely related to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> [Denis &amp; Schiffermüller], 1775 have long been popular subjects among entomologists due to their striking colours and wing patterns, and they are therefore represented in many collections. Until a few years ago, however, they were considered largely unproblematic from a taxonomic perspective. The recent descriptions by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Leraut (2005)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Wikström et al. (2020)</xref> served as a clear reminder that even among such conspicuous European moths, overlooked species remain to be discovered. Most recently, this shortcoming in the basic inventory of the European fauna was underscored by spectacular findings of further enigmatic species, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Carcina">Carcina</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ingridmariae">ingridmariae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Huemer, 2025 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Huemer 2025</xref>).</p>
<p>The taxonomy of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species group, however, seemed more or less resolved—at least superficially—following the discovery and description of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cardinalis">cardinalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Kaila et al., 2020 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Wikström et al. 2020</xref>). Attentive readers, however, could already discern doubts about the taxonomic status of certain populations of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Christoph, 1893) in the context of that description. Genetic data (DNA barcodes) indicated a considerable degree of variation within this taxon which, however, was interpreted as intraspecific. One sequence from Crete was particularly divergent, raising doubts about its assignment to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Wikström et al. 2020</xref>).</p>
<p>Meanwhile, one of the authors (PH), as part of extensive studies on the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Lepidoptera">Lepidoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> fauna of Crete (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Huemer et al. 2025</xref>), has been able to sample and sequence substantial additional material of the doubtful taxon. The molecular data now available, in combination with a thorough morphological re-analysis, confirm the existence of an additional and hitherto unnamed species, which is described below.</p>

Indeed, 40% of the currently documented 76 endemic species of the island have been described since the turn of the millennium (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Huemer et al. 2025</xref>). Nevertheless, the new species is surprising—especially considering that in the nearest regions of Greece (Peloponnese) and Cyprus two other members of the species group, respectively, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, are present. This may partly explain why <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="papaleonei">papaleonei</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. has so far been overlooked and was initially misidentified in BOLD as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Furthermore, the species appears to occur mainly in the less intensively sampled mountain regions of Crete, and has therefore been collected by only a few entomologists.</p>
      <p>The new species shares its primary habitat with several other endemics that are, according to current knowledge, also very locally distributed, including <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Herrichia">Herrichia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="vilhelmseniella">vilhelmseniella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Karsholt &amp; Lvovsky, 2018 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Oecophoridae">Oecophoridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Teleiodes">Teleiodes</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="albiluculella">albiluculella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Huemer &amp; Karsholt, 2001 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Gelechiidae">Gelechiidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Peribatodes">Peribatodes</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="omalensis">omalensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Rajaei, Skou &amp; Hausmann, 2019 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Geometridae">Geometridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Cryphia">Cryphia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="omalosi">omalosi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Fibiger &amp; Svendsen, 1998 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Noctuidae">Noctuidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>). Additional undescribed species, such as an <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Orectis">Orectis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Erebidae">Erebidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), have also been recorded in the greater Omalos region.</p>
<p><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="papaleonei">papaleonei</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. displays an allopatric distribution pattern relative to the other taxa and is the sole representative of the species group on Crete. The considerable genetic divergences of 9.4% (p-dist) from the geographically closest species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from the Peloponnese, and 6.29% from the Cypriot cluster of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, strongly support its species status when combined with diagnostic morphological features. The nearest neighbour, with 5.78% divergence, belongs to the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> cluster distributed from Samos through Armenia and Georgia to Iraq. Current knowledge indicates that members of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> group on the Palaearctic mainland are, aside from minor range overlaps, largely allopatrically distributed. Despite often wide distributions—<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cardinalis">cardinalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> even being transpalaearctic—intraspecific variability is low in some species but considerable with c. 2% divergence in others.</p>
<p>Therefore, in addition to the new species described herein, the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species group appears to comprise additional taxonomically problematic taxa that require clarification. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kacheticalis">kacheticalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> exhibits pronounced, geographically correlated divergence in DNA barcode sequences, which seems partially accompanied by corresponding morphological differentiation. Moreover, two genetically distinct and isolated clusters from China, misidentified as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="regalis">regalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, presumably represent undescribed species. Comparable patterns of putatively intraspecific DNA barcode variation have also been reported in other congeners, including <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lienigialis">lienigialis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Zeller, 1843) and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyralis">Pyralis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="farinalis">farinalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Integrative taxonomic approaches will be required to resolve their taxonomic status.</p>
