<p>Extensive material of the four species was examined, with the two new species collected in the Romanian Carpathians and the Italian Alps. The examined material was dried, pinned and either traditionally set or spread. The terminology of the wing pattern and the genitalia follows <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Gregersen and Karsholt (2022)</xref>.</p>

These samples were successfully processed at the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario (University of Guelph, Canada) to obtain DNA barcodes, using the standard high-throughput protocol described by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">deWaard et al. (2008)</xref>. Additionally, 12 public sequences from BOLD (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ratnasingham and Hebert 2007</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ratnasingham 2018</xref>) were used as reference material for tree construction, with <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Anasphaltis">Anasphaltis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="renigerellus">renigerellus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Zeller, 1839) (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Gelechiidae">Gelechiidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) as an outgroup. Complete voucher data and images of these specimens are available in the public dataset [<ext-link xlink:href="10.5883/DS-DICHJUNI" ext-link-type="doi">https://doi.org/10.5883/DS-DICHJUNI</ext-link>] “Barcoding <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">Dichomeris</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="juniperella">juniperella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species group”.</p>
<p>Sequences were assigned to <abbrev xlink:title="Barcode Index Numbers">BINs</abbrev>, algorithm-based operational taxonomic units that provide an accurate proxy for species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ratnasingham and Hebert 2013</xref>). <abbrev xlink:title="Barcode Index Numbers">BINs</abbrev> are automatically calculated for records in BOLD that comply with the DNA Barcode standard. Degrees of intra- and interspecific variation in the DNA barcode fragments were calculated under the Kimura 2-parameter model of nucleotide substitution using the analytical tools of BOLD Systems v. 4.0 (<ext-link xlink:href="http://www.boldsystems.org" ext-link-type="uri">http://www.boldsystems.org</ext-link>). The calculation of intraspecific distance was further normalised using BOLD’s calculation tools to reduce sampling bias at the species level. A neighbor-joining tree of the DNA barcode data from the dataset was constructed using MEGA11 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Tamura et al. 2021</xref>) under the Kimura 2-parameter model for nucleotide substitutions.</p>
<p>Male genitalia preparation, performed by PB, is a variant of the so-called unrolling technique for the preparation of complex genitalia introduced by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Pitkin (1986)</xref>. The difference in the technique consists of the cutting of both membranous connections between the vinculum and the tegumen (instead of the cutting of the right-hand side connection alone) which allows the symmetric setting on the slide of the both resulting parts. Standard unrolled slides were prepared by PH. Male slides were stained with Mercurochrome. Female genitalia preparation follows standard techniques (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Robinson 1976</xref>) and the genitalia were stained with Chlorazol Black E and with Mercurochrome.</p>
<p>Photographs by PB were taken with a Canon EOD 5D Mark Ⅲ camera, adults with a Canon lens MP-E 65, using ring flash and a magnification of 2:1 and genitalia with a Wild Heerbrugg microscope using a 10× objective and a 2.5× ocular lens. Adult photographs by PH were taken with an Olympus OM-D Mark III camera equipped with a 60-mm macro lens, while genitalia images were obtained using a Zeiss Axiolab 5 microscope connected to an Olympus OM-D Mark III camera. Images were stacked using Helicon Focus 4.80 software and post-processed with Adobe Photoshop software. Photograph of the habitat in Romania was taken using Huawei Nova 5T mobilephone.</p>

          <title>Description.</title>
<p>Adult, male (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). Head: smooth, covered with black scales ventrally and laterally around the eye; frons curved, covered with whitish grey lamellate scales; vertex with tufts of grey, whitish grey tipped scales except lateral sides covered with white long scales; ocellus distinct; compound eye large; antenna ⅔ the length of forewing, with scape and pedicellus grey, but dorsally both black, flagellum ringed grey-black, ciliate; proboscis well developed, brownish grey, scaled; maxillary palp tiny, brownish grey; segment 1 of labial palp short and covered with black scales, segment 2 long with tuft of long scales projecting forwards and upwards, scales grey, whitish grey tipped on ¼ dorsal part of outer surface, dorsal surface and ½ dorsal part of inner surface and black on the rest, segment 3 long, pointing upwards, grey except black on the ventral surface and around apex. Thorax and tegulae covered with long grey, whitish grey tipped scales. Wingspan (measured to the nearest half mm) 16–19 mm, forewing length 7.5–8.5 mm. Forewing sub-triangular, ratio (calculated by the width divided by length) 0.27 to 0.28. Forewing covered with grey scales at the basal and sub-basal areas and with grey scales mixed with numerous and unevenly dispersed grey black tipped scales in the rest of the wing, and mixed with a few whitish grey scales in the post-median and apical areas. Markings black and whitish grey: narrow basal black streak on costa; small, elongate, indistinct whitish grey sub-basal spot below costa; long, indistinct whitish grey post-median costal spot followed by similar, but short sub-apical spot; two black, rounded discal spots at about ⅖ and ⅗ of the wing; distinct whitish grey interstigmatic patch and similar but shorter patch immediately distal of discal 2 spot; plical stigmata elongate, black, 1 indistinct, 2 distinct; row of nine indistinct black dots, three of them on costa from post-median costal spot toward apex and six terminal dots from apex towards tornus. Fringes black around apex, along termen whitish grey with two distinct black terminal lines, plain whitish grey to tornus.</p>
<p>Hindwing broadly trapezoidal, ratio 0.30 to 0.31, apex short and pointed, the termen below the apex sinuate, grey, fringes whitish grey with two indistinct black terminal lines.</p>
<p>Underside brownish grey, fringes similar, but with yellowish base and with two indistinct black dividing lines. Legs brownish grey, dorsally with long yellowish grey scales.</p>
<p>Abdomen grey, dorsally each segment distally edged with a row of yellowish grey scales, last segment greyish yellow.</p>
<p>Variation: the grey black tipped scales may form tiny and indistinct black patches in the apical ⅓ of the forewing; whitish grey post-median and sub-apical spots may vary in size and may be more or less confluent; plical stigma 1 may be absent; some of the costal or terminal small black dots may be absent; all these combined may result in slightly darker or lighter specimens.</p>
<p>Female (Fig. 2). Head with appendages and thorax as in male; flagellum with shorter cilia. Smaller than the male on average, wingspan 15.5–17.5 mm, forewing length 6.5–7.5 mm; forewing narrower (ratio 0.25 to 0.26), but hindwing wider (ratio 0.32); the extent of the mixed grey black tipped and whitish grey scales in the post-median and apical areas almost equal; pattern similar.</p>
<p>Variation: whitish grey post-median costal spot may be larger or may even form a weak post-median fascia; whitish grey interstigmatic patch may be shorter; plical stigmata may be confluent.</p>
<p>Male genitalia (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">7</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">11</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">15</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">19</xref>–<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">20</xref>). Uncus fused with tegumen, of medium length, hood-like and spinose, apex slightly concave. Uncus with pair of tiny pinnacles (socii) laterally, each bearing a strong hair. Gnathos basally with pair of crook-shaped lateral processes, gnathos-hook falcate, slightly angulated. Culcitula heavily spinose. Tegumen short, with flap-like lobes. Parateguminal sclerites a pair of small, dorsally oriented, tapering and setose lobes (but sectioned in the midline and hanging near the parateguminal hair-sack on the slide). Parateguminal hair-sack with coremata (the latter not visible on the slide). Valva long, with longitudinal fold, basal ⅗ narrow and distally widening, then abruptly widening at ⅗, distal ⅖ parallel sided, apically rounded and setose. Sacculus short, wide and sparsely setose, with smooth margins, lateral margin straight, medial margin evenly curved, apex tapering. Vinculum long and narrow, ventrally projecting, with wide folding zone, concave medially. Juxta a pair of long and asymmetric lobes, basally fused with medial vinculum, left process 1.25 times longer than right, both slightly sinuous, distally with tiny lateral crests, apex obtusely pointed and slightly setose. Phallus large, laterally flattened, at posterior ⅖ of ventral margin dorsally bent at about 30 degrees, distinctly concave at ⅗, then almost straight, distally pointed; ductus ejaculatorius enters ante-dorsally; longitudinal sclerite large, distally tapering, end pointed; vesica with crescent-shaped, granulose cushion.</p>

Posterior apophysis almost twice as long as papilla analis, rod-like, slender, strongly sclerotised. Segment Ⅷ twice as broad as long, with row of sparse setae along posterior margin. Anterior apophysis slightly shorter than segment Ⅷ, rod-like, slender, strongly sclerotised. Ostium bursae slightly broader than half the width of segment Ⅷ, antrum distally slightly widened. Colliculum with sclerotised, complex sclerite, smaller part in ductus bursae, larger part in posterior part of corpus bursae and extending into basally sclerotised ductus seminalis; arched anterior margin of the sclerite unevenly curved and interrupted to ductus seminalis; ductus seminalis connected postero-laterally on the right side. Corpus bursae membranous, as wide as segment Ⅷ and twice as long; the exit area of accessory sack from corpus bursae membranous with two tiny sclerites; accessory sack connected postero-ventrally, small, its diameter ⅔ of the width of segment Ⅷ.</p>

The habitats are exposed alpine scree with junipers (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F11">33</xref>). Univoltine. Adults are on the wing from the middle of June to the end of July, highly dependent on general weather conditions. However, the flying period might not be longer than 2–3 weeks: in 2024, a year with an unusual early spring, the collecting site in the Făgăraș Mountains was visited twice, the first time on 12 June when adults were not found, but adults emerged from spinnings collected with pupae between 18 and 23 June; on 12 July, on the second site visit, again no adults were observed. In contrast, one of the records from the Retezat Mountains dates from mid-August. The adults can be beaten from their host-plants. Once disturbed, they fly very fast, up to about 4–5 m above the ground and follow a sinuous route. Males may fly longer distances, up to tens of metres, females usually less, then suddenly hide within junipers or other vegetation.</p>

<p>With nearly 900 described species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Gelechiidae">Gelechiidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is one of the most diverse lepidopteran families in Europe (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Huemer and Karsholt 2020</xref>). However, comprehensive genetic surveys of DNA barcodes indicate a surprisingly large amount of potential cryptic diversity, with no fewer than 65 clusters with a unique, unidentified BIN, as well as 114 nominal species with more than one BIN (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Huemer et al. 2020</xref>). The main reason for this deficit in the inventory of the fauna is the continued lack of taxonomic revisions in some groups. Comprehensive monographic studies are currently only available for parts of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Gelechiinae">Gelechiinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe" reg="Gnorimoschemini">Gnorimoschemini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe" reg="Litini">Litini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe" reg="Gelechiini">Gelechiini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Huemer and Karsholt 1999</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">2010</xref>), and are lacking for the species-rich subfamilies <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Anacampsinae">Anacampsinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Anomologinae">Anomologinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Aristoteliinae">Aristoteliinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Dichomeridinae">Dichomeridinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, as well as the less diverse <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily" reg="Thiotrichinae">Thiotrichinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and genera recently classified as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe" reg="Gelechiini">Gelechiini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, such as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sophronia">Sophronia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Hübner, 1825. The discovery of two previously unnamed species is therefore surprising.</p>
<p>Both new discoveries are morphologically cryptic and have therefore been overlooked. In the external morphology the two new species resemble <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="juniperella">juniperella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, only differing slightly in the ground colour, and the genitalia—particularly in the male sex—are very similar to other related species, even to the externally strikingly different <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="marginella">marginella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. In addition to rather subtle diagnostic features in morphology—except in the female genitalia—the new species seem to differ from related taxa in their ecological preferences, particularly in their altitudinal distribution: <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="carpatiella">carpatiella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. is a characteristic species of the alpine zone, at 2000–2300 m, of the Romanian Carpathians, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dolomiella">dolomiella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. occurs at lower altitudes from about 1500 to nearly 2000 m, but still in the subalpine zone of the south-eastern Alps. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="juniperella">juniperella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> on the contrary inhabits the mountain zone, between 650 and 1000 m in the Carpathians whereas in the Alps it is found from lower valleys of ca 600 m up to more than 2400 m (western part of the Alps). In northern Europe this species generally occurs at lower altitudes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Gregersen and Karsholt 2022</xref>: 149). We are not aware of any sympatric occurrence of species of this complex in the Carpathians and in the Alps. However, in the south-eastern Alps <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dolomiella">dolomiella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dichomeris">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="juniperella">juniperella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> habitats are sometimes separated only by a few kilometres. Due to the restricted distribution of the new species in this zone and the conversely large genetic distances to related species, it can be assumed that it is an old relict that migrated from the south over short distances during the postglacial period.
