DOI: 10.3897/nl.46.106936

Authors: Huw Roberts, Bengt Å. Bengtsson

Abstract: Eretmocera hafeetensis sp. nov., a moth in the family Scythrididae, is described and illustrated based on the examination of three male and 13 female specimens collected at the foot of Jebel Hafeet, an isolated 1,140 metres-high massif just south of Al Ain, after which the new species is named. The new species is distinct from congeners in details of its male and female genitalia and is also readily separated in the field from other Eretmocera species. The new addition brings the number of confirmed species in this genus represented in the UAE to three. The discovery of this species at Ain Al Waal, Jebel Hafeet highlights the conservation importance of this and similar nearby locations, which are beginning to reveal unique species among its already species-rich fauna at a time of huge human encroachment into the area.

The francoeuriae species group in the genus Alloclita Staudinger, 1859 with description of A. canariensis Koster & Junnilainen, sp. nov. from the Canary Islands (Lepidoptera, Gelechioidea, Cosmopterigidae) https://nl.pensoft.net/article/48404/ Nota Lepidopterologica 43: 95-116

DOI: 10.3897/nl.43.48404

Authors: Sjaak J. C. Koster, Per Falck, Jari Junnilainen, Ole Karsholt, Erik J. van Nieukerken

Abstract: Alloclita canariensis Koster & Junnilainen sp. nov. is described from the Canary Islands Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. Two specimens from Gran Canaria were previously misidentified as A. francoeuriae Walsingham, 1905, a North African species. We record A. francoeuriae also as new for the Canary Islands, from Fuerteventura. The potential hostplants of A. canariensis are Asteriscus species (Asteraceae). DNA barcodes of both species are provided and compared with five other Alloclita species. The related Alloclita subitariella (Riedl, 1993), only known from the holotype from Saudi Arabia, is redescribed. These three species are placed in the new Alloclita francoeuriae group.

The Eastern Palaearctic Cosmopterix feminella Sinev, 1988, introduced in Italy: taxonomy, biology and a new synonymy (Lepidoptera, Cosmopterigidae) https://nl.pensoft.net/article/33962/ Nota Lepidopterologica 42(1): 49-61

DOI: 10.3897/nl.42.33962

Authors: Sjaak J.C. Koster, Giorgio Baldizzone, Helmut Deutsch, Peter Huemer, Erik J. van Nieukerken

Abstract: Cosmopterix feminella Sinev, 1988, previously known from the East Palearctic, Primorskiy Territory in Russia and Japan has been collected at light in Europe. In northern Italy 58 females were collected in two localities in the province Asti, two in Alessandria, three in Udine, and in one locality in Pordenone. Cosmopterix feminella is most likely parthenogenetic as only females are known. The caterpillars are leafminers on grasses. The species is redescribed and illustrated. DNA barcodes are provided and compared with other European species. Cosmopterix feminae Kuroko, 2015 is synonymised with C. feminella. The species was probably accidentally introduced into Italy.

Gielisella gen. n., a new genus and two new species from southern Spain (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae: Parametriotinae) with a catalogue of parametriotine genera https://nl.pensoft.net/article/14528/ Nota Lepidopterologica 40(2): 163-202

DOI: 10.3897/nl.40.14528

Authors: J.C. (Sjaak) Koster, Erik J. van Nieukerken

Abstract: The genus Gielisella gen. n., belonging to the Elachistidae: Parametriotinae is described with two new species from southern Spain: its type species G. clarkeorum sp. n. and G. nigripalpis sp. n., both only known from adults collected at light. DNA barcodes of both species are provided. The taxonomic history of the Parametriotinae is discussed and a catalogue of the 35 recognised genera is provided as appendix. The arguments for erecting a new genus are discussed and we hypothesize that this constitutes an overlooked native Palaearctic element, although we cannot completely rule out the possibility of imported exotic species.

Taxonomic confusion around the Peach Twig Borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller, 1839, with description of a new species (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) https://nl.pensoft.net/article/11184/ Nota Lepidopterologica 40(1): 65-85

DOI: 10.3897/nl.40.11184

Authors: Keld Gregersen, Ole Karsholt

Abstract: A new species of Gelechiidae is described as Anarsia innoxiella sp. n., based on differences in morphology and biology. It is closely related to and has hitherto been confused with the Peach Twig Borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller, 1839. Whereas larvae of the latter feed on – and are known to be a pest of – Prunus species (Rosaceae), the larva of A. innoxiella feeds on Acer species (Sapindaceae). All known synonyms of A. lineatella are discussed in detail, including Anarsia lineatella subsp. heratella Amsel, 1967, from Afghanistan and A. lineatella subsp. tauricella Amsel, 1967, from Turkey. Our study has shown no evidence for changing the present taxonomic status of these two taxa. We discuss also the status of the genus Ananarsia Amsel, 1957. The new species A. innoxiella is widely distributed in Europe and is often found in the same areas as A. lineatella, but the latter species does not occur naturally in northern Europe. A. innoxiella seems not to be of economic importance. We propose, in line with the provisions of Article 23.9 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, suppression of the priority of Tinea pullatella Hübner, 1796, nomen oblitum, over Anarsia lineatella Zeller, 1839, nomen protectum. An appendix with references on the prevailing use of the latter species is included.

Borkhausenia crimnodes Meyrick, 1912 (Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae), a southern hemisphere species resident in Portugal https://nl.pensoft.net/article/10938/ Nota Lepidopterologica 40(1): 15-24

DOI: 10.3897/nl.40.10938

Authors: Martin F.V. Corley, Sónia Ferreira, Alexander L. Lvovsky, Jorge Rosete

Abstract: Borkhausenia crimnodes Meyrick, 1912, a species described from Argentina, has been found resident in Beira Litoral, Portugal, constituting its first records in Europe. Borkhausenia intumescens Meyrick, 1921, described from South Africa, is shown to be synonymous with B. crimnodes, described from Argentina. COI barcode sequencing has shown that a Portuguese specimen has 100% similarity with specimens collected in South Africa. The origin of the Portuguese population remains unclear but it is likely to be connected with timber importation for the paper industry. Male and female genitalia of B. crimnodes type and the Portuguese specimens are illustrated and described.

Examination of the Scythrididae in the Bruand d’Uzelle collection: faunistic and taxonomic implications for the genus Scythris (Lepidoptera, Scythrididae) https://nl.pensoft.net/article/9267/ Nota Lepidopterologica 39(2): 151-167

DOI: 10.3897/nl.39.9267

Authors: Sylvain Delmas

Abstract: A review was made of the Scythrididae in the Bruand collection. This led to certain faunistic and taxonomic changes for Bruand’s taxa. Scythris subcinctella (Bruand, 1851), stat. rev., valid spec., has priority over Scythris crassiuscula (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855). Several synonymies are established: Scythris curtulella (Bruand, 1851), nomen dubium, is possibly conspecific with Scythris limbella (Fabricius, 1775); Scythris crassiuscula (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855), syn. nov. (= Scythris subcinctella (Bruand, 1851)); Scythris subaureicinctella (Bruand, 1856), syn. nov., emendation (= Scythris subcinctella (Bruand, 1851)); Scythris cinefactella (Bruand, 1851) is a nomen nudum (= Scythris tributella (Zeller, 1847), not Scythris laminella (D. & S., 1775) as considered by earlier authors); Scythris jurassiella (Bruand, 1858) is a nomen nudum (= Scythris bornicensis Jäckh, 1977). Scythris apicalis (Zeller, 1847) is deleted from the French checklist. Other species from the Doubs (France) are either confirmed or refuted. The year of publication of most of the taxa described by Bruand is 1851 and not 1847 as stated in the literature.

Coleophora gryphipennella (Hübner, 1796) (Lepidoptera, Coleophoridae) on Fragaria vesca L. (Rosaceae), a novel host, in the coastal dunes of The Netherlands https://nl.pensoft.net/article/6289/ Nota Lepidopterologica 38(2): 147-155

DOI: 10.3897/nl.38.6289

Authors: John A.M. van Roosmalen, Camiel Doorenweerd

Abstract: During regular surveys of Lepidoptera in the coastal dune North Holland Dune Reserve, we observed larval cases and feeding traces typical for Coleophoridae on wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca L., Rosaceae). The spatulate or pistol shape of the cases excluded Coleophora violacea (Ström, 1783) and C. potentillae Elisha, 1885. According to the literature, C. albicostella (Duponchel, 1842), very rare in The Netherlands, was the only Coleophora species known to create spatulate cases on this host. We collected larval cases for DNA analysis on the larvae and for rearing, which revealed that none of the collected larvae belong to the Coleophoridae previously recorded feeding on this host, but a mixture of three other Coleophora species. We found that early instar larvae of C. lutipennella (Zeller, 1838) and C. flavipennella (Duponchel, 1843), normally feeding on oaks (Quercus spp., Fagaceae) only, may be found feeding on F. vesca in the fall. We also found that C. gryphipennella (Hübner, 1796), abundant on Rose (Rosa spp., Rosaceae) in the coastal dunes of The Netherlands, regularly feeds on F. vesca and rearing experiments proved that it can complete its larval stage on F. vesca. We therefore conclude that Fragaria is a new host genus for C. gryphipennella. After reviewing all the C. albicostella records from The Netherlands, we conclude that it is a very rare species, likely restricted to the southernmost provinces. None of the confirmed records are from reared specimens. The host range of C. albicostella in literature is possibly overestimated and may not even include Fragaria.

A remarkable new species of the genus Catatinagma Rebel, 1903 (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) from Turkmenistan https://nl.pensoft.net/article/1153/ Nota Lepidopterologica 37(1): 67-74

DOI: 10.3897/nl.37.7935

Authors: Oleksiy V. Bidzilya

Abstract: A new highly specialized Catatinagma Rebel, 1903 species is described from Turkmenistan. Both sexes have completely reduced hindwings and strongly reduced forewings. The adults are active in February, jumping amongst Carex physodes M. Bieb. and being associated with rodent burrows. The new species is similar to Metanarsia trisignella Bidzilya, 2008, in the male genitalia. Both species are placed here provisionally in Catatinagma Rebel, 1903, and their position within Apatetrini is briefly discussed. The adult and the genitalia of both sexes are illustrated, and the behaviour of the new species is described.
